European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) approval for food contact applications - Mesamoll®

MESAMOLL® is listed in the new European Union (EU) regulation  Nr. 10/2011 (2011-01-14) for materials which has contact with food.

The permission for  the application as additive in the production of plastics refer to products in contact with aqueous media. Extensive migration experiments have shown that Mesamoll’s migration into these media is extremely low.

The above mentioned EU regulation is the consolidated form of the regulation 2002/72/EG and its attachments. This regulation will come into effect on the 20th day after its publication in the official journal of the EU and apply as of May 1st 2011.

Please note that there are limitations of the migration quantities and the application in non fatty Foods.

MESAMOLL® (alkyl (C10-C21) sulphonic acid, esters with phenol) FCM-Stoff-Nr. 884; Ref.-Nr. 34240; CAS-Nr. 0091082-17-6) is regulated for use as additive in the production of plastics. The specific migration limit (SML) is 0,05 mg/kg f in food. The application is limited: Not to be used for articles in contact with fatty foods for which simulant D is laid down.

This approval opens new market opportunities especially for the toy market.
