REACH Chemicals : 'Reaching out for health benefits'

1 February 2005

An interesting article has been published by Chemistry World on the internet website of the Royal Society of Chemistry (www.rsc.org)

In the article the following points are highlighted:

The monetary health benefit of the European Commission’s new chemicals policy, Reach, has been calculated based on what citizens might be willing to pay to reduce the risk of disease or death, rather than real health costs.

The calculation is flawed and should be examined from an epidemiological and economic perspective.

The calculation relies on a World Bank scenario that is poorly founded and unrelated to exposures within the scope of Reach.
