After the acquisition of top specialty chemicals and food ingredients distributor Orkila, in 2019, Azelis’ footprint in Africa enlarged significantly across many market segments. The Orkila group has offices in 13 countries and is active in more than 30 countries in the region. They represent a large number of renowned, world-class specialty chemicals and food ingredients manufacturers who have a strong strategic fit with Azelis’ principal base. Azelis South Africa also services Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
 
The acquisition of Umongo in January 2022 strengthened the Group’s foothold in industrial specialty chemicals in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Umongo is a major supplier and service provider to the lubricant industry across Sub-Saharan Africa, providing technical support and innovative solutions through their application laboratory. Headquartered in Durban, South Africa, Umongo’s 35 employees serve customers ranging from large multinationals and strong local players to smaller companies. 
 
The transaction supports Azelis’ sustainability commitments by increasing the diversity of its workforce in South Africa, expanding the relationship with blue chip principals with a strong sustainability agenda and innovative bio-based oils, and strengthening its offering for an end market which ultimately reduces friction and associated energy losses.
